🕯️ The Quote
If you cannot find the truth right where you are,
where else do you expect to find it?
— often attributed to Dōgen
🕊️ About the Author
Dōgen(道元) (1200–1253) was a Japanese Zen Buddhist monk and the founder of the Sōtō school of Zen in Japan.
Seeking a deeper understanding of Buddhism,
he traveled to China in the 13th century to study Chan Buddhism.
After returning to Japan,
he emphasized direct experience, meditation,
and awakening within everyday life itself.
This quote is often associated with Dōgen,
though the English wording appears to be more interpretive than a direct historical translation.
💭 Reflection
Sometimes we search for meaning
as if it exists somewhere far away —
in another place,
another stage of life,
or another version of ourselves.
Yet certain teachings quietly return us
to the present moment.
Not somewhere else.
Not someday.
But here.
Perhaps truth is not something distant to reach,
but something already waiting quietly
within ordinary life itself.
✨ In Practice
You might gently reflect:
・What am I always postponing for “someday”?
・Can I notice something meaningful in today, just as it is?
・What if this moment already contains part of the answer I seek?
Sometimes,
the place we are trying to arrive at
has been quietly beside us all along.
