🕯️ The Quote
Color fades from the flowers,
yet the fragrance remains.
— Ono no Komachi (小野小町)
🕊️ About the Author
Ono no Komachi (小野小町, 825?–900?)
was one of Japan’s most celebrated classical poets and one of the Six Immortal Poets (六歌仙).
Known for her beauty, emotional depth,
and the delicate sensitivity found in her verses,
Komachi’s poetry explores themes of love, impermanence, longing, and the quiet ache of passing time.
Her work expresses a uniquely Japanese understanding of beauty—
that things are precious because they fade.
This sensibility later evolved into
「物の哀れ(mono no aware)」—
a profound awareness of life’s fleeting, shimmering nature.
Even more than a thousand years later,
Komachi’s words still carry a soft, unmistakable radiance.
💭 Reflection
This poem reminds us that what truly matters
is not always what can be seen.
Beauty fades.
Seasons shift.
People change.
But essence remains—
the invisible fragrance of kindness,
the gentle imprint of connection,
the light someone once shared with us.
In a world that rushes forward,
Komachi’s words invite us to look deeper:
to notice the lingering scent of something meaningful
even after its form has changed.
✨ In Practice
Ask yourself today:
- What fragrance remains from this year?
- Which moments, even small ones, still warm your heart?
- What quiet kindness will you choose to carry into the new year?
Sometimes, what stays is not what we expect—
and that is its own kind of blessing.
