🕯️ The Quote

The purpose of life is not to attain enlightenment. It is to live.

— Kanoko Okamoto (岡本かの子)

Commonly attributed to Kanoko Okamoto; the original source of this wording has not been confirmed.

🕊️ About the Writer

Kanoko Okamoto (岡本かの子, 1889–1939) was a Japanese poet, novelist, and writer whose work explored life, love, human emotions, and Buddhist thought.

Born in Tokyo, she began writing poetry at a young age and became associated with the literary circle of Yosano Akiko and Yosano Tekkan. She published poetry in influential literary magazines, including Myōjō and Subaru.

She married the cartoonist Ippei Okamoto and was the mother of Tarō Okamoto, who later became one of Japan’s most celebrated artists.

Alongside her literary career, Kanoko devoted many years to studying Buddhism. Her reflections on spiritual life were deeply connected to the realities of being human — our joys, sorrows, desires, and struggles.

In her 1934 work Bukkyō Jinsei Dokuhon (A Buddhist Guide to Life), she wrote about the value of human emotions and the importance of living fully.

For Kanoko, spiritual understanding was not simply a matter of withdrawing from ordinary life. It was something to be discovered through life itself.

The quote above is widely attributed to her, although its original source remains uncertain. Its message nevertheless echoes an important theme in her writing: the relationship between spiritual understanding and the experience of being alive.

💭 Reflection

We sometimes imagine that spiritual growth means reaching a place where everything finally makes sense.

Where we no longer feel uncertain.

Where difficulties no longer disturb us.

Where we have somehow found all the answers.

But perhaps life is not asking us to become perfectly wise.

Perhaps it is asking us to live.

To experience joy without needing to hold on to it.

To face sadness without believing it will last forever.

To love, to wonder, to make mistakes, and to begin again.

Think of a flower blooming in autumn.

It does not wait until the conditions are perfect. It responds to the light, the rain, and the changing season.

Its beauty comes from being fully present in its own brief moment.

Perhaps there is something we can learn from that.

We do not need to understand every experience before allowing ourselves to live it.

And we do not need to have reached some distant state of enlightenment to appreciate what is already here.

A conversation.

A warm cup of tea.

A flower opening in the garden.

A moment of unexpected laughter.

Life continues to offer us opportunities to feel, discover, and grow.

Perhaps wisdom is not something waiting at the end of the journey.

Perhaps it grows through the way we live each day.

✨ In Practice

Today, give yourself permission to experience something without turning it into a lesson.

Enjoy a beautiful view.

Listen to music.

Spend time with someone you love.

Or simply notice how you feel in this moment.

You do not have to find a deeper meaning in everything.

Ask yourself:

・Am I sometimes so focused on understanding life that I forget to enjoy it?

・What makes me feel most alive?

・What would I like to experience more fully, just as I am?

Sometimes, living wholeheartedly is enough.
