🕯️ The Quote

Nature reveals her true heart only to her beloved.

— Torahiko Terada (寺田寅彦)

🕊️ About the Writer

Torahiko Terada (寺田寅彦, 1878–1935) was a Japanese physicist, essayist, and haiku poet.

He studied natural science at the Imperial University of Tokyo and later became a professor there. Alongside his scientific work, he wrote essays and poetry about nature, everyday life, earthquakes, and the small details that often escape our attention.

He was also closely connected with the literary world of his time. As a student, he met Natsume Sōseki, who introduced him to English and haiku, and he later became associated with poets such as Masaoka Shiki and Takahama Kyoshi.

For Terada, observing nature was not simply a scientific act. It required curiosity, patience, and a willingness to come close to the world around us.

The quote above comes from his 1933 essay Kagakusha to Atama (The Scientist and the Mind), where he compares the relationship between a scientist and nature to that between lovers. In the original Japanese, he writes:

「自然はやはりその恋人にのみ真心を打ち明けるものである。」

Nature, he suggests, reveals something of her deepest truth only to those who approach her with genuine intimacy.

💭 Reflection

We often think of nature as something we look at.

A moonlit sky.
A tree changing color.
The sound of insects on an autumn evening.

But Terada’s words suggest something more intimate.

Perhaps nature is not simply something to observe. Perhaps the longer we stay with it, the more it reveals.

A place we have visited many times can suddenly look different—the light has changed, the air has shifted, or we notice something we had never seen before.

Maybe nothing outside us has changed at all.

Maybe we have simply become close enough to notice.

As the nights grow longer, perhaps we can give ourselves a little more time to simply be outside—to look up, listen, and notice.

Nature may have been speaking all along.

✨ In Practice

Tonight, if you have a moment, step outside and notice one small thing.

The moon.

A sound in the trees.

The evening air.

A single flower.

Instead of asking what it means, simply stay with it for a while.

Ask yourself:

・What do I notice when I stop trying to interpret everything?

・What changes when I spend more time with something?

・Where in nature do I feel that something is being quietly revealed to me?

Sometimes the smallest details become visible only when we stop rushing past them.
