🥣 Lead-In

While walking toward Tofuku-ji Temple in Kyoto, I came across a charming ceramics shop filled with beautiful handcrafted pottery.

The charming ceramics shop where I discovered Hanakessho.

Among the colorful displays, I discovered Hanakessho—ceramics decorated with delicate crystal patterns that resemble flowers in bloom.

I also found something I had been looking for for quite some time: a beautiful chasen holder for my matcha whisk.

I was delighted to find a chasen holder that I immediately fell in love with. I had been looking for one for quite some time.

In this article, I’d love to introduce both the beauty of Hanakessho and one of my favorite discoveries from Kyoto.

🌸 What Is Hanakessho?

As I explored the shop, I became increasingly fascinated by the beautiful crystal patterns decorating the ceramics.

These pieces are known as Hanakessho, which literally means “flower crystals.”

Unlike painted designs, the delicate patterns are created naturally as the glaze cools after firing. During this process, crystals slowly form across the surface, creating shapes that resemble flowers in bloom.

Because each piece develops differently, no two are ever exactly alike.

That uniqueness is one of the reasons Hanakessho ceramics are so special. Every bowl, cup, or plate has its own character, making each one truly one of a kind.

☕ A Matcha Latte Surrounded by Beautiful Ceramics

Before leaving, I decided to enjoy a matcha latte at the shop.

The café serves both matcha and matcha lattes, with the latte available either hot or iced. The sweetness can also be adjusted to your preference.

I chose a hot matcha latte and enjoyed it in one of the shop’s beautiful Hanakessho bowls. Seeing the vibrant green matcha against the deep blue crystal glaze made the experience even more memorable.

The shop also offers a matcha-whisking experience, allowing visitors to prepare their own bowl of matcha while surrounded by these beautiful ceramics.

🕊️ Kaha’s Note

Looking back, it was one of those unexpectedly wonderful days.

I found the chasen holder I had been hoping to buy and discovered the beauty of Hanakessho at the same time.

The staff member was very kind and took the time to explain the ceramics and answer my questions, making the visit even more enjoyable.

Before leaving, I found myself admiring a beautiful white katakuchi bowl with delicate blue crystal patterns. Perhaps next time, it will be waiting for me.

Kyoto is full of sophisticated shops like this, and wandering through them is one of my favorite parts of visiting the city.

Combined with my visit to Tofuku-ji Temple, it became a day I will remember with great fondness.
