🌟 Lead-in

As spring slowly begins to deepen toward early summer,
another flower quietly starts to appear among the growing green.

Clematis blooms softly along the vines,
its large petals opening gently among fresh leaves and soft light.

Rather than standing apart from the garden,
clematis often reveals itself quietly —
hidden among leaves and branches,
waiting to be noticed little by little.

Some blossoms open fully toward the sky,
while others remain softly folded,
holding the quiet beauty of a flower not yet completely revealed.

As the season moves gradually toward the rainy days of early summer,
these delicate flowers begin to appear,
bringing a calm brightness to the garden.

🌸 Seasonal Photo Notes

These photos were taken in our garden
during the transition from spring toward early summer,
as the clematis quietly began to bloom among the growing green.

Some flowers had already opened fully,
while others were still wrapped softly in pale green buds,
waiting a little longer for their turn to bloom.

Against the fresh greenery of the season,
the white petals seemed to glow gently in the soft light.

Clematis flowers often appear quietly among the vines,
blending naturally into the surrounding leaves and branches.

Even the unopened buds
carry a quiet beauty of their own,
hinting at the flowers that will soon appear.

🌼 About Clematis

Clematis flowers, known as Tessen (鉄線) in Japan,
have long been appreciated not only for their elegant flowers,
but also for the strength of their vines.

The name “Tessen,” meaning “iron vine,”
comes from the thin yet remarkably strong stems,
which were said to resemble iron wire.

While the flowers appear soft and delicate,
the vines themselves are surprisingly resilient —
creating a quiet contrast between beauty and strength.

In Japan, clematis motifs have appeared
in kimono, obi, ceramics, and seasonal designs,
especially from the Edo period onward.

Their flowing vines and graceful flowers
became associated with elegance,
seasonal beauty,
and the gentle vitality of nature.

White, purple, pink, and deep-colored varieties
can all be found during the transition from spring toward early summer,
quietly adding color to gardens and everyday life.

⭐ Kaha’s Note

This year, spring has remained cooler and rainier than usual,
making the arrival of early summer feel slower and more gradual.

Perhaps because of that,
seeing the clematis begin to bloom
felt especially gentle and meaningful.

In Japan, clematis flowers are sometimes used
in seasonal kimono and haneri (decorative collar) designs,
especially during the transition from spring toward early summer.

One of my favorite haneri features delicate clematis embroidery.

Because seasonal flowers are worn only for a short time each year,
there is a quiet joy in waiting for the right season to return.

As the garden slowly changes
from spring toward early summer,
seeing the clematis begin to bloom
always brings a gentle sense of excitement.

Each flower appears in its own timing,
quietly becoming part of the changing season.
