While exploring Kyoto, I stopped at a cozy café to cool down with one of Japan’s favorite summer treats—kakigori.
What arrived at the table was almost too beautiful to eat.
Tiny goldfish seemed to be swimming in a crystal-clear jelly pond, creating a playful little summer scene that instantly made me smile.
Sometimes, the smallest discoveries become the most memorable moments of a journey.
🍧A Bowl Full of Summer
Kakigori is a traditional Japanese shaved ice dessert enjoyed during the hot summer months.
Made from finely shaved ice and flavored with colorful syrups or fruit, it has been loved in Japan for centuries.
This one looked like a tiny summer festival captured in a bowl. The cheerful goldfish, crystal-clear jelly, and fresh maple leaf came together to create a refreshing seasonal design that instantly made me smile.

At first, I thought it would be an ordinary serving of kakigori…
But when it arrived, I couldn’t believe the size!
From the side, I finally realized just how enormous it was! It was much bigger than I had expected.
As I made my way through the fluffy ice, I reached the layers hidden inside.
The menu had already described the lemon syrup, granola, and a rich cream cheese layer at the bottom. Even so, experiencing all those different textures and flavors together was something completely new to me.
The refreshing lemon syrup, the crunchy granola, and the smooth cream cheese with its cheesecake-like flavor blended together beautifully. It was a combination I had never tried before—and I absolutely loved it.

🌰 A Sweet Little Surprise
While I was waiting for my kakigori, the café offered a complimentary chestnut sweet.
As someone who loves chestnuts, it was such a delightful surprise.
Inside was a whole chestnut, giving the sweet a wonderfully rich chestnut flavor that I truly enjoyed. It was far more satisfying than I had expected, and it made the wait feel like a special part of the experience rather than simply waiting for dessert.
Sometimes, it’s these small, thoughtful touches that make a place truly memorable.

One of the things I love most about traveling is discovering places I never planned to visit.
A beautifully crafted bowl of kakigori, a rich chestnut sweet, and the quiet charm of a modern Kyoto wagashi café became one of my favorite memories from Kyoto.
