In Japan, spring rarely arrives all at once.
It begins quietly, almost invisibly.
A branch changes.
A bud softens.
A single blossom opens.
And before we realize it, the landscape has shifted.
Cherry blossoms do not rush the season.
They reveal it — slowly, gently, moment by moment.
This is how spring opens.

🌸Cherry Blossoms Opening
① Closed Buds
Winter still lingers on the branches.
The buds remain tightly closed, holding the promise of spring.
② Buds
A hint of color appears.
The blossoms are still folded, but spring is getting closer.
③ Branches with Blossoms
More blossoms appear along the branches,
and the tree slowly begins to brighten.
④ Full Bloom
Soon the blossoms spread across the entire tree. From below, the branches form a canopy of white and pale pink,
turning the sky itself into part of the bloom.
⑤ Falling Petals
Soon the blossoms begin to fall.
Petals drift quietly to the ground,
gathering along steps and beneath the trees.
Spring does not end suddenly.
It softens,
petal by petal.
🌸 Cherry Blossoms in Saidaiji Temple in Nara
Later in the season, I visited Saidaiji Temple.
Cherry blossoms framed the quiet temple grounds,
their pale petals drifting softly in the spring air.
In places like this, the season feels both gentle and timeless.

🌸 Gyoikō — A Different Shade of Spring
Not all cherry blossoms bloom in pink.
In Nara Park, a rare variety known as Gyoikō opens later in the season.
Its petals appear pale green at first,
a color said to resemble the soft yellow-green robes once worn by aristocrats in the imperial court.
As the blossoms mature, faint pink lines appear near the center of the petals.
Unlike the familiar sakura, Gyoikō feels almost hidden in the trees —
a quiet, unusual color lingering after most cherry blossoms have already fallen.
In the Manyo Botanical Garden, a sign points the way to the rare green cherry blossom known as Gyoikō.
