Lotus flowers and water lilies have inspired people around the world for centuries. Although many of us associate them with Asia, these remarkable aquatic plants also flourish in other parts of the world when the environment allows them to thrive.
Their beauty, resilience, and ability to adapt remind us that nature often reveals its wonders wherever the right conditions exist.
Last year, my friend Anne from France shared some stunning photographs of lotus flowers and water lilies she had discovered in her country. Fascinated by their beauty, I became curious about the places where they were growing and decided to learn more.
Because lotus flowers are more commonly associated with Asia, I never expected a friend in France to share such remarkable photographs taken there. It felt like one of those unexpected connections that nature sometimes creates across cultures.
Today, I’d love to share Anne’s inspiring photographs together with what I discovered about these gardens. Perhaps they will inspire anyone who enjoys photography, gardening, or simply the beauty of the natural world.
🌍 Two Gardens, One Love of Aquatic Plants
The photographs in this article were taken in two remarkable gardens in southern France: The Garden of the Martels, near Toulouse, and The Water Gardens of Carsac-Aillac, in the Dordogne region.
Although each garden has its own unique character, both celebrate the beauty of aquatic plants, offering visitors the chance to admire lotus flowers, water lilies, and many other species in carefully created natural settings.
Let’s take a closer look at each of these beautiful gardens.
💧Water Gardens of Carsac-Aillac in Dordogne, Southwestern France
Located in Carsac-Aillac in the Dordogne region of southwestern France, Les Jardins d’Eau is a garden devoted to aquatic plants. Its ponds and waterways are filled with lotus flowers, hardy and tropical water lilies, papyrus, and other waterside plants. Wooden footbridges and an aquatic labyrinth with more than 500 metres of walkways allow visitors to experience these remarkable plants from just above the water.
The garden is also home to small creatures that share this watery environment. Frogs, dragonflies, damselflies, fish, and other wildlife can be found among the ponds and plants, showing how a carefully maintained garden can also become a living habitat.
Anne’s photographs capture the water lilies in several colors—from deep red and pink to white—as well as one of the frogs living beside them. Together, the images reveal not only the beauty of each flower, but also the life surrounding the water.
These photographs remind us that beautiful flowers are only one part of this living ecosystem.

Located near Toulouse in southern France, The Garden of the Martels is a botanical garden known for its remarkable collection of plants from around the world. Among its many attractions are beautiful lotus flowers, tropical water lilies, and a wide variety of aquatic and exotic plants, creating a peaceful setting that changes with the seasons.
Anne’s photographs beautifully capture the lotus at different stages of its life—from elegant buds and newly opened flowers to the distinctive seed pods that remain after the petals have fallen. Together, they reveal not only the beauty of the blooms themselves, but also the fascinating life cycle of this remarkable plant.

💡Lotus and Water Lilies – What’s the Difference?
Although lotus flowers and water lilies may look similar at first glance, there are several easy ways to tell them apart.
- Lotus flowers grow above the water, held high on sturdy stems. Their leaves also rise above the surface, and after flowering they produce the distinctive seed pods that many people recognize.
- Water lilies float on the surface of the water. Their flowers and rounded leaves rest directly on the pond, often creating the calm, mirror-like scenes seen in paintings and gardens.
In Japan, both flowers are admired during the summer, but they offer different impressions. Lotus flowers are often associated with Buddhist temples and symbolize purity, while water lilies bring a quiet elegance to ponds and water gardens.
💜Lotus and Water Lilies in Japan
Lotus flowers and water lilies can also be enjoyed throughout Japan during the summer. Many temples and traditional gardens become especially beautiful during the blooming season, and some people even visit specifically to admire these remarkable flowers.
Anne has a wonderful eye for capturing nature in its vibrant moments. My own photographs may be simpler, but I also enjoy recording the beauty I encounter during my journeys through Japan. Here are a few of my favorite moments from this summer.
This year, I returned to Saidaiji Temple to admire the lotus flowers once again. The unusually hot summer meant there were fewer blooms than usual, but the visit brought new discoveries about this sacred place and its history. On another summer visit, I also found delicate water lilies quietly blooming at Hannyaji Temple, adding yet another memorable encounter with Japan’s seasonal flowers.

In Japan, many people look forward to the changing seasons, and visiting temples to enjoy seasonal flowers has long been part of that tradition. Lotus flowers and water lilies are among the special sights that make summer so memorable.
In recent years, however, I have felt that the seasons are changing. Summers have become much hotter and longer, and some flowers seem to fade more quickly than they used to. Sometimes I wonder if future generations will experience the same seasonal beauty that we enjoy today.
That is why I feel especially grateful each time I have the chance to admire lotus flowers or water lilies in bloom. Even on the hottest summer days, they remind me how beautiful nature can be.
If you ever visit Japan during the summer, I hope you’ll take the opportunity to visit one of its temples and experience these remarkable flowers for yourself.
